House in Kingsbarns, Fife

The Category B Listed Smithy and House in Kingsbarns were originally built between 1831-1834, with the house extended upwards to two storeys in 1861. Further lower quality extensions and alterations were added over subsequent years, detracting increasingly from the original legibility and definition of both buildings. Our design has sought simply to rediscover and re-present the character of the original buildings by selectively removing the disparate later alterations and replacing them with a highly glazed linking element. The independence of the original building forms is now revealed, with a kitchen-dining area inhabiting this “in-between” space and addressing the different landscape characters of the front and rear gardens. Additional new accommodation is placed in a simple, partly sunken, timber clad extension to the rear of the main house which looks out onto the woodland garden setting.
