M20 Cycle/Foot Bridge

Ashford

Kent Highways are making improvements at Junction 9 on the M20 in Ashford. These are required to enable and support all of the planned developments along the western corridor of the town, and to provide the additional capacity that these developments require. As part of the improvements the existing pedestrian/cycle routes are being severed at Junction 9 and alternative pedestrian/cycle facilities are required to provide a link between Ashford Town Centre located to the south and new developments planned north of the M20.

The construction of a new cycle and pedestrian bridge to the east of Junction 9 provides an opportunity to form and improve linkages between areas north of the M20 and the city centre. It is also intended that the bridge become a gateway landmark for Ashford, to reinforce a positive image of the city while creating a memorable destination and journey. The appearance of the bridge therefore underpins the rationale for the development and is critical to its success.

Nicoll Russell Studios conceived the scheme concept and are providing aesthetic and contextual advice for this civil engineering project as well as preparing drawings, multimedia visualisations and animations for public consultation and to assist with the planning process.
