The Canal Brewhouse & Restaurant is conceived as a celebration of the American craft brewing industry.
The host building, a circa 1920's, art deco style, 3 storey brick structure has been extended at ground and first floor.
The existing art deco characteristics are repeated in the extension. The facing brick has been carefully matched and art deco details introduced which enliven the composition and create a significant landmark structure on Bearsden Road.
The brewing process is industrial by nature and this characteristic has been exploited to enhance the visitors' experience of the building with elements of the process being laid bare for inspection.
Internally the development is split into two very distinct parts. The ground floor contains the bar and the first, a more traditional restaurant, with open plan kitchen.
On both floors the brewing process provides an anchor for the interior design features. In contrast to the raw 'rootsie', craft image within the ground floor bar, the 1st floor takes its cues from 1920's America with plaster and timber finishes predominating.
'Bric-a-brac' in the form of framed beer labels and 1920's industrial American prints together with large scale landscape photographs by Ansil Adams complete the illusion.
