The RIBA award winning TSB branch is contained in a fine Victorian sandstone building on a busy corner in the centre of historic St Andrews. Its external and interior design responded to the Bank's new 'open door' approach. A friendly business meeting place was created reinventing a cramped unit which had suffered several piecemeal alterations but still had considerable space barely utilised. Technological requirements were managed so the Bank can respond to future developmens without affecting the fabric of the branch.
Fundamental to the success of the branch was the necessity to successfully maximise the ground floors potential to provide a larger public space with provision for transaction facilities, conversation areas, exhibition and interview spaces, whilst designing for demands in the future. A flexible 'technology wall' houses autotellers and provides a designated zone for future unknown technological needs, controlling their impact on the rest of the building.
The branch and the TSB branding were designed as a total concept to complement their surrounding in this conservation conscious city. As a special feature the street clock was designed to provide a useful public facility as well as structural support and a base anchoring the corner into the Victorian townscape.
